When most people think of parasites, they picture organisms that steal nutrients or damage tissues. Which Parasites Are Most Commonly Associated with Allergic Reactions?

- Roundworms (Ascaris)
- Threadworms or Pinworms (Strongyloides)
- Schistosomes (blood flukes)
- Certain filarial worms
- Liver flukes
The type and severity of symptoms depend on the parasite species, the stage of infection, and the individual’s immune response.
Understanding Allergies
An allergy occurs when the immune system overreacts to a substance that is normally harmless, such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or certain foods.
During an allergic reaction, the immune system releases chemicals including histamine, which causes symptoms such as:

Certain parasites stimulate immune cells called mast cells to release histamine.

- Increased IgE Antibodies

- Respiratory Symptoms

- Shortness of breath
- Chest discomfort

Can Parasites Cause Food Allergies?
Some parasitic infections can increase intestinal inflammation or alter immune responses, which has led researchers to investigate whether they might influence allergic diseases in certain circumstances.
Parasites and Chronic Hives
Some studies have found that parasitic infections are associated with chronic urticaria (persistent hives) in a small proportion of patients.
In these cases, treating the underlying parasitic infection has led to improvement in the hives.
However, chronic hives have many possible causes, and parasitic infection is only one of several potential explanations.
