Many people believe they are allergic to cat hair, but in reality, most cat allergies are caused by proteins produced by the cat, not by its fur. The fur simply carries these allergens around the environment.

The primary cause of cat allergy is a protein called Fel d 1. This protein is produced mainly in:
- Salivary glands
- Skin (sebaceous glands)
- Anal glands
When a cat grooms itself, saliva containing Fel d 1 coats its fur. As the saliva dries, tiny allergen particles become airborne or settle on furniture, carpets, clothing, and bedding.
Other cat allergens include proteins found in:
- Skin flakes (dander)
- Urine
- Tears
However, Fel d 1 is responsible for most allergic reactions.
How the Allergy Develops
An allergy occurs when the immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless substance as dangerous.
In people with cat allergies:
- The immune system encounters Fel d 1.
- It produces IgE antibodies against the protein. (Immunoglobulin E) antibodies are proteins produced by your immune system to fight off parasites and respond to allergens. When you are exposed to harmless substances like pollen or certain foods, your body can mistakenly create specific IgE antibodies, triggering allergic reactions or asthma.
- These antibodies attach to mast cells and basophils, two types of immune cells.
- During later exposure, the allergen binds to the IgE antibodies.
- The immune cells release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals.
- These chemicals produce allergy symptoms.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms often appear within minutes of exposure but may develop several hours later.
Common symptoms include:
- Sneezing
- Runny or blocked nose
- Itchy nose
- Itchy, watery eyes
- Red eyes
- Coughing
- Wheezing
- Chest tightness
- Shortness of breath
- Itchy skin
- Hives
- Eczema flare-ups
People with asthma may experience worsening asthma symptoms after exposure to cats.
Amount of Exposure
Repeated exposure can increase symptoms in susceptible individuals, although not everyone exposed to cats develops an allergy.
Why Cat Allergens Spread So Easily
Fel d 1 is extremely small and lightweight.
It can:
- Remain suspended in the air for long periods.
- Stick to clothing and shoes.
- Be carried into buildings where no cats live.
- Persist in carpets, furniture, and curtains for months.
This explains why people with severe cat allergies may experience symptoms even in places where no cat is present.
